Trailside Galleries is pleased to present Ralph Oberg’s Western Wilderness beginning July 1 and continuing through the July 31st.  For this event, Oberg has created a new collection of work featuring both pure landscapes as well as wildlife paintings, all of which have been inspired by locations close to his Colorado home.

Born in Mississippi, Oberg was raised within sight of the front range of the Rockies, a fortunate accident that has defined his self-image, lifestyle and 40 plus years career as an artist of the mountain landscape and its wildlife.

Oberg began his art career in commercial illustration before moving into fine art on a full time basis.  Wildlife subjects dominated his interest for over ten years and his early development was inspired by the works of several renowned wildlife painters including Rungius, Liljefors, and Kuhnert. He later became interested in using a more painterly approach in his work, and   began to study with many of the country’s finest plein air landscape painters. Since then, Ralph has focused on painting the landscape on location as a means of learning the colors and values of the natural world and how to capture a sense of the moment and place.

Extensive travels on foot and by horseback in the North American wilderness provide the primary source for his subjects.  A good part of his adulthood has been spent scrambling across western North America, from Denali and the Wrangell-St Elias Range in Alaska to the Sierra and Cascades, and the spires of the northern Rockies from the Wind Rivers to the Canadian Rockies.   Oberg says, “For me to be on a mountain top is a metaphor for the fulfillment of total bliss and conscious awareness that nature provides.  I hope my work speaks to those who have similar yearnings.”
