Jackson, WY… Trailside Galleries is pleased to present William Suys: Portraits From The Ranch, a showcase of new works by the Wisconsin based painter.
Raised by deaf parents, William Suys grew up in an environment tuned-in to visual cues. He drew constantly as a child. Though painting nights and weekends as long as he can remember and taking his classical art education into his own hands, Suys did temporarily veer away from formal art employment by leaving the S.C. Johnson Wax art department, transitioning to the corporate world and finishing a second degree in business management with graduate work in finance.
Suys admits to wearing wingtips for a number of years and credits Johnson Wax and its relentless quest for excellence with teaching him the importance of quality and the value of providing an outstanding product. In 1995, he left corporate life to become a full-time painter. A lover of diverse subject matter, Suys continues to distill his vision toward primarily figurative work – human and animal – as well as conceptual realism and the occasional surprise.
For his showcase at Trailside Galleries, Bill notes, “My focus for this show will further explore my theme of “People And Other Animals,” and will benefit from recent travels that have been planned specifically to gain a greater in-depth understanding of, and relationship with, a number of animals found in the Western United States. My growing relationship with animals has been documented in a number of art magazines and began with a long-distance, abstract view that has evolved as the result of my appreciation for each individual animal's persona and character.
He adds, “As is my goal with human portraiture, whether I choose a regal profile or direct eye contact between friends, I am designing my paintings of these creatures to give them the feeling of ‘hero’ while allowing the observer to build a personal bond with each animal. I am seeking to produce more than a depiction by creating a real connection between the animal, its environment, and the viewer. My hope is that the viewer will sense the compassion I feel for each of these creatures, while experiencing its palpable and autonomous presence through paint.”
